Western swing supergroup Asleep at the Wheel brings 40-plus years of experience to its unique combination of American blues, swing and traditional fiddling with demanding musical chops. Founder Ray Benson calls it “jazz with a cowboy hat,” and has played a foundational role in making it the living and creative genre of music that it is today. They dominate the “Country Instrumental” category with 10 Grammy awards, 20 studio albums, and 20 singles on the Billboard country charts, in addition to receiving the “Lifetime Achievement in Performance” from the American Music Awards. The band, originally from Paw Paw, West Virginia, now bases itself out of Austin, Texas. They come to Crested Butte with a new 2018 album – New Roots.

The Father of Newgrass and King of Telluride, legendary mandolin master Sam Bush has long established himself as bluegrass royalty. A lifetime of channeling his energy has led to stylistic innovations that have changed the course of bluegrass and roots music alike. The sheer ferocity of his playing and the brilliant suppleness, ease and warmth of his vocals have earned him a suite of honors including a “Lifetime Achievement” from the Americana Music Association; four International Bluegrass Music Association “Mandolin Player of the Year” awards, and three Grammy’s heralding talents from best album to best performance. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. But for Tommy Caldwell, The Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, he was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, then had his marriage fall apart. He escaped all the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing The Dawn Wall. A beguiling, sinister, must-see story.
