Driving

From Denver
From Gunnison
Driving from Denver International Airport to Crested Butte takes about 4½ to 5 hours (roughly 260 miles). The most common route follows I-25 south, US-285 west over Kenosha Pass, and US-50 over Monarch Pass, before continuing through Gunnison for the final stretch into Crested Butte. In summer and fall, the drive is straightforward and scenic; in winter, Monarch Pass can add time during storms, so good tires and flexibility are important.
Driving from Gunnison to Crested Butte is quick and scenic, taking about 30 minutes along Highway 135 for the roughly 28-mile drive. The route passes ranchland, mountain peaks, and frequent wildlife sightings, making it feel far shorter than it is. In summer and fall, the drive is easy and beautiful; in winter, roads are well maintained but can be snow-packed during storms, so extra time and winter tires are smart. Regular shuttle and RTA bus service are available.
